Choosing Plants for a Gurugram Home, Balcony or Farmhouse

By Rajput Farms · 2026-10-14

Choosing plants for a Gurugram home starts with your space: indoor rooms, a balcony or terrace, a garden, or farmhouse grounds. Note the light, the room plants have to grow and how much care you can give, then match plant types to each area. Our Sector 104 nursery can help you shortlist.

Start with the space, not the plant

The most useful question when buying plants is not "what looks good?" but "where will it live?". A plant that suits farmhouse grounds may be wrong for a balcony, and an indoor plant may struggle in an open garden. Before you visit any nursery, walk through your property and list each area you want to green.

For most homes in Gurugram (Gurgaon) the areas fall into four groups: indoor rooms, balconies and terraces, home gardens and society landscapes, and larger farmhouse grounds. The sections below take each in turn, using the plant categories stocked at the Rajput Farms Dhanwapur Nursery in Sector 104.

Indoor rooms

Indoor plants are the natural choice for living rooms, bedrooms and work corners. When choosing, note:

  • Light: how close the spot is to a window and how much daylight it gets.
  • Space: whether the plant will sit on a table, a shelf or the floor.
  • Care: how often you can water and check on it.
  • Container: whether the pot will sit on furniture or the floor, and how drainage will be handled.

Tell the nursery team about each spot. A description of the room is more useful than a plant name picked online.

Balconies and terraces

Balconies and terraces are container spaces, so the pot matters as much as the plant. Flowering plants, climbers, ornamental plants and ground cover plants are the categories most homes in Gurugram look at for these areas. Before buying, check:

  • Exposure: how many hours of direct sun and how much wind the space gets.
  • Weight and drainage: what the floor or railing can take, and where water will drain.
  • Climbers: whether there is a railing, grille or trellis for them to grow on.
  • Access: how easily you can reach every pot for watering.

If you plan a full terrace or balcony makeover rather than a few pots, that is a landscaping job. See our terrace garden development and green balcony development services.

Home gardens and society landscapes

For ground-level gardens, the nursery range covers ornamental, flowering, ground cover and climbing plants, plus hedge plants for edges and screening. A simple way to plan is in layers:

1. Edges and screening: hedge plants along boundaries or paths. 2. Feature planting: ornamental and flowering plants where you want colour. 3. Low cover: ground cover plants for open patches of soil. 4. Vertical interest: climbers on walls, fences or pergolas.

A rough sketch of the garden with measurements makes the conversation at the nursery much quicker. Society landscapes follow the same layers, only at a larger scale.

Farmhouse grounds

Farmhouses in and around Gurugram usually need a mix of larger plants. For farmhouse grounds the nursery supplies palms, avenue and shade trees, hedge plants, flowering and ornamental plants and lawn grass. Think about:

  • Driveways and approach roads: avenue plants along the route.
  • Seating and open areas: shade plants where people will sit.
  • Boundaries: hedge plants for a green edge.
  • Lawns: the area you want under grass, and how it will be watered.
  • Resort-style feature planting: palm plants.

Large orders can be handled as bulk supply. Plants come from Rajput Farms' own nurseries at Dhanwapur (Gurugram) and Chakeri (Kanpur); see nursery plant supply. If you want the whole property designed and planted, that is a service: see farmhouse landscaping and farmhouse development. Some farmhouse owners also ask about a dense native planting patch; see Miyawaki forest development.

A plant buying checklist

Use this checklist with any nursery, including ours:

  • List each area to be planted, with rough measurements.
  • Note the light in each area: full sun, part shade or indoor.
  • Note the use: colour, shade, screening, lawn or indoor greenery.
  • Decide on containers for balconies, terraces and indoor spots.
  • Plan watering before planting, especially for lawns and larger grounds.
  • Take photos of the spaces to show the nursery team.
  • Decide on scale: a few plants for one balcony, or a full plant list for a farmhouse.

Plants or a landscaping service?
