What Is Ashwagandha?
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), also known as Indian Ginseng or Winter Cherry, is one of the most important herbs in Ayurveda, classified as a Rasayana (rejuvenating tonic). The name comes from Sanskrit — "Ashwa" (horse) + "Gandha" (smell) — referring to both the horse-like odour of its root and the traditional belief that it imparts the vitality of a horse. Ashwagandha has seen explosive global demand growth, with the worldwide market projected at over $1 billion. India produces over 10,000 tonnes of dried Ashwagandha root annually, with Madhya Pradesh (Neemuch, Mandsaur), Rajasthan, and Gujarat being major production centres.

- Jawahar Ashwagandha (JA-20, JA-134): Improved varieties developed by CIMAP with higher alkaloid content
- Poshita: High-yielding variety developed by IISR, Lucknow
