What Is Giloy?

Giloy (Tinospora cordifolia), known as Guduchi or Amrita (the divine nectar) in Sanskrit, is one of the three Amrit plants in Ayurveda. It is a large, deciduous climbing shrub found throughout tropical India. Giloy is classified as a Rasayana in Ayurveda and is listed in the Indian Pharmacopoeia. It gained massive popularity for its traditional immune-supportive properties.

Commercial Applications

  • Immunity Products: Giloy juice, tablets, and capsules are among the top-selling Ayurvedic products in India

  • Ayurvedic Pharma: Key ingredient in Guduchi Satva, Amritarishta, and various Ayurvedic formulations

  • Herbal Supplements: Growing demand in nutraceutical sector for immune support products

  • Traditional Medicine: Used in Ayurveda, Siddha, and folk medicine systems across India

  • Export: Giloy extract and powder exported to USA, Europe, Middle East, and Southeast Asia

Cultivation Guide

  1. Climate: Tropical to subtropical; grows well in 25-40°C range. Drought tolerant once established.

  2. Soil: Grows in all soil types; prefers well-drained loam. Very adaptable.

  3. Planting: Stem cuttings (15-20 cm long, 2-3 nodes) planted during monsoon. Needs support structure for climbing.

  4. Spacing: 2-3 meters between plants along fence, trellis, or Neem trees (Neem-supported Giloy is considered most potent in Ayurveda).

  5. Harvesting: Stems harvested after 2-3 years of growth for maximum potency.

  6. Yield: 5-8 tonnes fresh stems per hectare after establishment.
