What Is Lemongrass?
Lemongrass (Cymbopogon species) is a tropical aromatic grass with a strong citrusy, lemon-like fragrance. Two species dominate commercial cultivation: East Indian Lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexuosus) — preferred for essential oil with high citral content (75-85%), and West Indian Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) — preferred for culinary use and herbal teas. India is the world's largest producer and exporter of Lemongrass oil, with Kerala, Karnataka, Assam, and Maharashtra being major production states.
Commercial Applications
- Essential Oil: Lemongrass oil (citral-rich) used in perfumery, soap making, cosmetics, and flavouring — India exports 1000+ tonnes annually
- Herbal Tea & Beverages: Lemongrass tea is a popular health drink worldwide
- Mosquito Repellent: Citronella-related compounds make it a key ingredient in natural insect repellents
- Food & Flavouring: Used in Thai, Vietnamese, and Southeast Asian cuisines
- Aromatherapy: Lemongrass essential oil used in diffusers, massage oils, and spa products
