What Is Tulsi (Holy Basil)?
Tulsi (Ocimum tenuiflorum, syn. Ocimum sanctum) is the most sacred and widely used medicinal plant in India. Revered in Ayurveda as the "Queen of Herbs" (Vishnu Priya), Tulsi has been cultivated for over 5,000 years. Every part of the plant — leaves, stems, flowers, roots, and seeds — has documented uses in traditional Indian medicine systems including Ayurveda, Siddha, and Unani. Tulsi is classified as a Rasayana (rejuvenating herb) in the Charaka Samhita and is referenced extensively in ancient texts for its adaptogenic, immunomodulatory, and stress-relieving properties.
Tulsi Varieties We Supply
1. Rama Tulsi (Green Leaf Tulsi / Ocimum tenuiflorum)
The most common variety with bright green leaves and a mild, sweet aroma. Rama Tulsi grows up to 75 cm tall and is widely used for herbal teas, Tulsi drops, and Ayurvedic formulations. It thrives in full sunlight and well-drained soil. Best for commercial herbal product manufacturing due to high leaf yield.
2. Krishna Tulsi (Purple/Shyama Tulsi)
Distinguished by its dark purple leaves and stems with a peppery, clove-like flavour. Krishna Tulsi contains higher concentrations of certain beneficial compounds compared to green varieties. Traditionally considered the most potent variety in Ayurveda. Used in premium herbal supplements, essential oil extraction, and speciality wellness products.
3. Vana Tulsi (Wild Forest Tulsi / Ocimum gratissimum)
A tall, wild variety growing up to 2 meters with larger leaves and a strong, camphorous aroma. Vana Tulsi is extremely hardy and drought-resistant. Excellent for essential oil production, aromatic gardens, and large-scale commercial plantations in semi-arid regions.
4. Kapoor Tulsi (Camphor Basil / Ocimum kilimandscharicum)
Known for its strong camphor-like fragrance and insect-repelling properties. Kapoor Tulsi grows vigorously and produces abundant foliage. Widely used in natural pest management, aromatherapy products, mosquito repellent formulations, and organic farming intercropping.
